We can do it!
By Zachary Smith
PAGE 1. PANEL 1.
WE HAVE A PICTURE OF A LARGE CARGO SHIP, FULL OF CONTAINERS,
A CRANE, AND THE BRIDGE. WE SEE AN X-RAY
TYPE SHOT OF KALLISTE IN THE HULL
OF THE SHIP. KALLISTE HAS HIDDEN HER
TATTOOS.
KALLISTE (CAPTION):
“I always loved ships.”
PAGE 1. PANEL 2.
NOW WE ARE ACTUALLY IN THE HULL OF THE SHIP, WHERE KALLISTE IS
SLEEPING. THERE ARE SHADOWS AROUND
HER. THERE IS REMAINING BITS OF FOOD
THAT SHE HAS BEEN STEALING AROUND HER.
KALLISTE (CAPTION):
“I could always sleep so soundly.”
PAGE 1. PANEL 3.
ONE OF THE SHADOWS IS NOW VERY CLOSE TO KALLISTE, AND WE SEE
A LARGE CRESCENT WRENCH.
KALLISTE (CAPTION):
“Too soundly.”
SHADOW 1: Tell the
captain we have a stowaway.
SHADOW 2: She looks
like a pretty one.
SHADOW 1: Believe me,
best just to get the captain.
PAGE 1. PANEL 4.
KALLISTE IS BEING MARCHED INTO THE CHOW HALL, HER HANDS ARE
TIED, SHADOW 1, Maxime, IS REVEALED TO BE A LARGE BLACK MAN, AND THE SECOND
SHADOW IS A THAI MAN, ARAN. ALL WE SEE
IS THE CAPTAIN’S HANDS, BROWN, FOLDED ON THE TABLE.
CAPTAIN JULIO:
Another stowaway. You’re lucky it
was my ship, girl.
KALLISTE: And you’re
lucky I don’t feel like slipping this weak handcuff knot and
reduce your crew by a few members.
CAPTAIN JULIO: I
always tell Maxime to tie it tighter.
Thank you Maxime, Aran, you
may go. I will talk with her.
PAGE 1. PANEL 5.
CAPTAIN JULIO AND KALLISTE LOOK AT EACH OTHER.
DIALOGUE CONT.
CAPTAIN JULIO: I’m
surprised to get a stowaway leaving America.
KALLISTE: It’s worn
me down. I was thinking about going
home.
CAPTAIN JULIO: Where
is that?
KALLISTE: You can
just drop me off in the middle of the ocean, that’s where I think it
was.
CAPTAIN JULIO:
Haha. No, no, we are to treat you
humanely. Tell me your story, we
have time.
KALLISTE: There is
always time, too much of it in fact.
PAGE 2. PANEL 1.
KALLISTE IS RIDING PASSENGER IN A TRUCK, THERE IS ANOTHER
WOMAN, GLENDA, WHO IS DRIVING THE TRUCK, WE SEE THEM DRIVING UP TO A MILITARY
SHIP CONSTRUCTION SITE.
KALLISTE (CAPTION):
“I like this ship. Let me tell
you about the last time I was on a
ship…”
PAGE 2. PANEL 2.
KALLISTE AND GLENDA ARE BOTH LEAVING THE TRUCK, AND HEADING
TOWARDS THE WORK SITE.
KALLISTE: Thanks
again for the ride.
GLENDA: You’re the
only one who will ride with me, so thank you.
KALLISTE: Forget
them, Glenda. You’re alright by me.
GLENDA: You’re too
sweet Kelly.
PAGE 2. PANEL 3.
KALLISTE IS HOLDING A PIECE OF METAL AS GLENDA PUTS RIVETS
INTO IT. THE WORK WHISTLE SOUNDS.
GLENDA: Lunch.
KALLISTE: Thank
god. The way I’m working, I’m going to
be stronger than The Great
Sandow
GLENDA: You and me
both. You got a cigarette?
KALLISTE: Yeah.
PAGE 2. PANEL 4.
GLENDA AND KALLISTE ARE SMOKING, THEIR LUNCH BOXES ARE
EMPTY, SHOWING THAT THEY HAVE ALREADY EATEN.
GLENDA: You still
haven’t met Jimmy. You can eat at my
mom’s tonight, he’d love to
meet you.
KALLISTE: Yeah,
sounds good.
GLENDA: Mom’ll be
happy to finally meet you too. It’s
you’re all I talk about.
KALLISTE: Not much time
out?
DIALOGUE CONT.
GLENDA: Too many
other things to deal with.
PAGE 2. PANEL 5.
GLENDA IS TENDING TO JIMMY’S WHOOPING COUGH AT THE DINNER
TABLE. KALLISTE LOOKS CONCERNED. GLENDA’S MOTHER, YOLANDA, LOOKS AT KALLISTE.
JIMMY IS A SICKLY FIVE YEAR-OLD. YOU CAN TELL THE WHOOPING COUGH HAS TAKEN
IT’S AFFECT ON HIM.
YOLANDA: Do you have
any children?
KALLISTE: No
ma’am.
YOLANDA: It’s better
that way right now. Who knows if the
father would even come
back. Just like Jimmy’s father.
GLENDA: Mother,
please…
PAGE 3. PANEL 1.
KALLISTE IS LETTING JIMMY BOX WITH HER, LETTING HIM THROW
PUNCHES AT HER HANDS.
KALLISTE: That’s it,
keep your right hand up when your left hand is jabbing.
PAGE 3. PANEL 2.
JIMMY BEGINS TO COUGH AGAIN, VIOLENTLY. YOLANDA SCOOPS HIM UP.
YOLANDA: He shouldn’t
be exerting himself.
KALLISTE: Oh god, I’m
sorry.
GLENDA: I’ll—
YOLANDA: No,
entertain your guest, I got him.
PAGE 3. PANEL 3.
KALLISTE AND GLENDA ARE BOTH SMOKING OUTSIDE ON THE PORCH.
KALLISTE: You never
told me his dad died in the war.
GLENDA: Because he
didn’t, or at least I don’t think he has.
You’d have to ask Alice.
KALLISTE: You didn’t?
GLENDA: He wasn’t
wearing a ring, we were new to the neighborhood, and I just
thought he was so nice. He wasn’t
wearing any ring.
PAGE 3. PANEL 4.
KALLISTE IS LEANING AGAINST THE RAILING OF THE PORCH.
KALLISTE: Is this
why I’m your only passenger?
GLENDA: Yeah…none of
the other women can stand me for what I did.
KALLISTE: Of course
Bob is getting pats on the back from the boys while you get
talked about. Ain’t it always the
way.
PAGE 3. PANEL 5.
A PLANE IS FLYING OVER, GLENDA POINTS TO IT.
GLENDA: That’s what I
really want to do.
KALLISTE: Like
Amelia.
DIALOGUE CONT.
GLENDA: Yeah. But with Jimmy here and the war going on, how
could I ever do that?
KALLISTE: It didn’t
hurt that they were affluent as fuck.
GLENDA: Haha. I love the way you talk. So honest.
PAGE 4. PANEL 1.
KALLSITE IS LOOKING AT THE CAPTAIN.
KALLISTE: That’s me,
all honesty.
CAPTAIN JULIO: You
haven’t told me much, girl. Is that the
story of your
grandmother?
KALLISTE: If that
works for you. Is there anyway I can get
something to eat? Normally I’d steal it
from the mess…
PAGE 4. PANEL 2.
KALLISTE HOLD UP HER HANDS TO SHOW THAT THEY ARE STILL TIED.
KALLISTE: …but, you know.
PAGE 4. PANEL 3.
THE CAPTAIN CUTS THE ROPES.
CAPTAIN JULIO: You
can walk around without any worry of my men.
But at night
you must go
into the brig, is that clear?
KALLISTE: No offense,
but the little Asian one was giving me a look so—
CAPTAIN JULIO: He is
new. He does not know my policy for
harassment of someone
in my charge.
PAGE 4. PANEL 4.
KALLISTE LOOKS AT THE CAPTAIN WHILE RUBS HER WRISTS, HE
HOLDS THE ROPE. THERE ARE TWO LOW
HANGING LOOPS IN THE ROPE, REPRESENTING TESTICLES.
KALLISTE: Which is…
PAGE 4. PANEL 5.
THE CAPTAIN CUTS THROUGH THE ROPE. NO DIALOGUE.
PAGE 4. PANEL 6.
THE TWO LOOPS LAND
ON THE TABLE, KALLISTE LOOKS AT
THEM.
CAPTAIN JULIO: That,
and a nice, long swim.
KALLISTE: I think I
like you.
PAGE 5. PANEL 1.
CAPTAIN JULIO IS SHOWING KALLISTE AROUND THE SHIP, THEY ARE
NEAR THE EDGE, WHERE YOU CAN SEE THE WATER.
KALLISTE: I hate the
ocean. It’s so endless. But I love ships and the water. People,
huh?
CAPTAIN JULIO: I have
found that they are always difficult to understand, no matter
age, gender,
religion, or ethnicity. We are puzzles.
PAGE 5. PANEL 2.
KALLISTE LOOKS AT HER WRIST, THE INVISIBILITY KANJI IS
PROMINENT. CAPTAIN JULIO NOTICES.
CAPTAIN JULIO: Did
you actually get that in Japan?
KALLISTE: Yes. A while back.
It was a reminder that I need to lay low, because all I
cause is pain.
CAPTAIN JULIO: That’s
all we cause to each other. Hedgehog’s
dilemma I’m afraid.
PAGE 5. PANEL 3.
KALLISTE IS FOLLOWING THE CAPTAIN UP THE STAIRS TO THE
BRIDGE.
KALLISTE: How long
have you been on the water?
CAPTAIN JULIO: My
father owned a fishing boat, so practically my whole life. I
wanted to have
a fishing boat, but there just wasn’t a lot of money in
it.
PAGE 5. PANEL 4.
CAPTAIN JULIO IS LETTING KALLISTE INTO THE DOOR OF THE CHOW
HALL.
KALLISTE: You shouldn’t
give up on your dreams.
CAPTAIN JULIO: Yes,
but my wife wanted more, and this was more lucrative. I’d do
anything to
make her happy. So if the decision came
up one million
times, I would
make the same decision.
KALLISTE: You’re
sweet. Foolish, but sweet.
PAGE 5. PANEL 5.
THE CAPTAIN AND KALLISTE ARE SITTING, FOOD IS BEING BROUGHT
TO THEM.
DIALOGUE CONT.
CAPTAIN JULIO: And
you, are you married?
KALLISTE: I was,
once.
CAPTAIN JULIO: You
make yourself sound so old.
KALLISTE: Because I
am. I didn’t get to finish my ship
story.
CAPTAIN JULIO:
Continue, please.
PAGE 6. PANEL 1.
KALLISTE IS IN THE FACTORY AGAIN. KALLISTE IS WELDING. NO DIALOGUE.
PAGE 6. PANEL 2.
KALLISTE HAS PICKED UP HER WELDING MASK, TO REVEAL HER
FACE.
KALLISTE: Long ass
smoke break, Glenda.
PAGE 6. PANEL 3.
GLENDA COMES WALKING OVER, SHE IS BEATEN, BRUISED, AND HAS A
BLACK EYE. KALLISTE IS TAKEN ABACK.
KALLISTE: Shit girl,
what happened? Who did this?
GLENDA: A is Alice, where as B is for
bitch, and C is for…
PAGE 6. PANEL 4.
KALLISTE IS HOLDING GLENDA AS SHE IS CRYING.
GLENDA: She told me
not to come work here. That she would
make my life hell. I
didn’t know when she would do it, or if she even would. I hate feeling
ashamed Kel. I just want to yell
that it was her piece of shit husband on the
prowl.
PAGE 6. PANEL 5.
KALLISTE IS LOOKING AROUND THE FACTORY, SHE SEES THE OTHER
WOMEN STARING AT HER AND GLENDA.
GLENDA: I just
thought he was some nice guy.
KALLISTE: Shhh…You
hear that? It was your piece of shit
husband that wanted to
fuck. She didn’t know.
PAGE 7. PANEL 1.
GLENDA BREAKS AWAY FROM KALLISTE.
GLENDA: Kelly, you
can’t.
KALLISTE: What are
they going to do? I dare them to try
that shit with me. Hear that?
Try and jump me and see what happens to you.
PAGE 7. PANEL 2.
GLENDA PULLS KALLISTE AWAY.
GLENDA: Let’s get
out of here.
KALLISTE: Where we
going?
GLENDA: I don’t know
about you, but I need a drink.
PAGE 7. PANEL 3.
KALLISTE AND GLENDA ARE IN A BAR AT A TABLE, WITH DRINKS IN
HAND. THEY ARE LOOKING AT TWO SAILORS
SITTING AT THE BAR. OLD MEN SURROUND
THEM, BUYING THEM DRINKS.
KALLISTE: What do you
say, I take the brunette, and you can have the blondie?
GLENDA: I don’t know
who wants to suck their cock more, me or the old war vets.
KALLISTE: Give them a
break. A good fight get’s the blood
going, but in there case
that could kill them. They just
miss it, and want to surround themselves
with it.
PAGE 7. PANEL 4.
GLENDA LIGHTS UP A CIGARETTE.
GLENDA: I could do
with a tussle, believe me.
KALLISTE: How many?
GLENDA: Alice,
Karrie, and Debra.
KALLISTE: What a
piece of shit. I can’t stand when people
don’t fight fair. That
settles it, no more walking around by yourself.
PAGE 7. PANEL 5.
THE BRUNETTE SAILOR COMES OVER TO TALK TO THEM. GLENDA IS LOOKING AT HER WATCH.
DIALOGUE CONT.
BRUNETTE: You ladies
interested in a dance?
GLENDA: I wish,
sailor boy. I got a young man waiting
for me at home. You coming?
KALLISTE: I might
stick around a while.
PAGE 8. PANEL 1.
GLENDA SPEAKS INTO KALLISTE’S EAR.
GLENDA: Watch him.
KALLISTE: He’ll have
to tear me off of him.
PAGE 8. PANEL 2.
KALLISTE AND THE SAILOR ARE DANCING. THE BLONDE SAILOR LOOKS SAD. NO DIALOGUE.
PAGE 8. PANEL 3.
KALLISTE IS HAVING SEX WITH THE BRUNETTE SAILOR.
BRUNETTE: So good.
KALLISTE: Don’t
stop. You can come in me.
BRUNETTE: Hnnhh…
PAGE 8. PANEL 4.
KALLISTE IS TAKING A PILL IN THE BATHROOM.
ONI RYU: You know,
it’s a good thing I’m here. Who knows
what he’s crawling with.
KALLISTE: Whatever it
is, it can’t kill me.
ONI RYU: Us,
darling. Us.
PAGE 8. PANEL 5.
KALLISTE IS READY FOR WORK, SHE’S PATTING THE SAILOR ON THE
BUTT.
KALLISTE: Gotta
go. How long you in town for?
BRUNETTE: Three more
days.
KALLISTE: Meet you
again at the bar. Tell your friend I
think he’ll have better luck
this next time, but to bring a condom.
BRUNETTE: You got it.
PAGE 8. PANEL 6.
KALLISTE IS HOLDING THE DOOR OPEN FOR THE SAILOR.
KALLISTE: Get
dressed, I need to get to work fix your fucked up ship.
PAGE 9. PANEL 1.
THE CAPTAIN IS SHAKING HIS HEAD.
CAPTAIN JULIO: Such
language.
KALLISTE: This from a
man who castrates people.
CAPTAIN JULIO: I
don’t need to such foul things to do them.
KALLISTE: Point.
PAGE 9. PANEL 2.
KALLISTE LOOKS AT THE CAPTAIN.
KALLISTE: You don’t
seem bothered by sex in my story. You
just a dirty old man?
CAPTAIN JULIO: Most likely. But who am I to begrudge someone an
orgasm? Life is
too short for
me to care what you do in a bedroom.
KALLISTE: Most men
would say a woman is slut for sleeping around.
PAGE 9. PANEL 3.
THE CAPTAIN LIGHTS A PIPE.
CAPTAIN JULIO: Most
men are hypocrites who like to control everything around them
while claiming
freedom for themselves.
KALLISTE: You don’t
worry about being a ‘progressive?’ A man
falling to the feminist
agenda?
PAGE 9. PANEL 4.
THE CAPTAIN BLOWS OUT SMOKE.
CAPTAIN JULIO: The
feminist have an agenda? I would like to
see this. They seem
like any other
group: they desire something, so they
fight for it. I
didn’t know
you needed an agenda to fight for equality, or your
rights.
KALLISTE: Where were
you my whole life?
CAPTAIN JULIO: On
this ship.
PAGE 9. PANEL 5.
KALLISTE AND THE CAPTAIN LAUGH.
KALLISTE: If only it
were that short. Anyway…
PAGE 10. PANEL 1.
KALLISTE IS ARGUING WITH GLENDA AT GLENDA’S HOUSE. GLENDA STILL HAS THE BRUISES FROM THE DAY
BEFORE.
GLENDA: I can’t just
ask her to watch him a whole night.
KALLISTE: Why
not? When do you get to have any
fun?
GLENDA: It’s just… I
can’t.
KALLISTE: Just ask
her.
PAGE 10. PANEL 2.
KALLISTE WAITS OUTSIDE.
NO DIALOGUE.
PAGE 10. PANEL 3.

GLENDA: That sailor
isn’t gonna wanna dance with some bruised up tomato.
PAGE 10. PANEL 6.
KALLISTE IS APPLYING MAKE UP TO GLENDA’S FACE IN KALLISTE’S
BATHROOM.
GLENDA: You’re really
good at this.
KALLISTE: I’ve had a
lot of experience covering shit up.
GLENDA: Get into some
fights?
KALLISTE: If you only
knew.
PAGE 11. PANEL 1.
GLENDA IS WALKING INTO THE BAR FROM THE PREVIOUS NIGHT, SHE

no bother.
GLENDA: God, it’s
been so fucking long.
KALLISTE: Get some.
PAGE 12. PANEL 3.

GLENDA: Let’s see.
PAGE 12. PANEL 5.
KALLISTE IS ON TOP OF THE BRUNETTE IN THE LIVING ROOM.
DIALOGUE CONT.
BRUNETTE: I would
have to say that this is the best R&R I’ve ever had.
KALLISTE: If you can
get it up like you did last night, I’m going to guarantee that it
will be the best.
PAGE 13. PANEL 1.
BACK IN THE CHOW HALL, THE CAPTAIN IS LOOKING AT KALLISTE,
AS SHE CRIES.
CAPTAIN JULIIO:
Child, did something happen that night?
Did those men—
KALLISTE: No. They didn’t do anything. I…can I just go back to my cell.
CAPTAIN JULIO: Are
you sure? Dinner is about to be served.
KALLISTE: I’m not
hungry.
PAGE 13. PANEL 2.
KALLISTE IS SITTING IN THE CELL. CAPTAIN JULIO STANDS OUTSIDE.
CAPTAIN JULIO: You
don’t need to tell me anymore.
KALLISTE: I do. I’m getting to the end, and I need to confess

CAPTAIN JULIO: I can
take care of myself.
KALLISTE: Yeah, but
bad news seems to just follow me around.
PAGE 13. PANEL 5.
KALLISTE IS LYING ON HER BUNK.
ONI RYU: Can you tell
him? The worst thing you’ve ever
done. And you’ve done some awful things.
KALLISTE: I have to
tell him. Confession is good for the
soul. I want all this weight off of me
before…
ONI RYU: Before
what? You’re hiding something from
me. It’s very hard for you to
do
that, but you’re doing it.
PAGE 13. PANEL 6.
KALLISTE HAS TURNED OVER IN HER BUNK, SHE FACES THE WALL.
ONI RYU: Before
what?!
PAGE 14. PANEL 1.
KALLISTE AND THE CAPTAIN ARE SITTING IN THE CHOW HALL
AGAIN. THEY ARE HAVING COFFEE POURED FOR
THEM.
CAPTAIN JULIO: Did
you have a good night’s sleep?
KALLISTE: No, but
that’s okay. I’m not really in need of
one. I just need to tell you this last
little bit, then could you drop me off.
CAPTAIN JULIO:
Hahaha. You’re funny.
PAGE 14. PANEL 2.
THE CAPTAIN LOOKS AT KALLISTE, SHE IS SERIOUS.
CAPTAIN JULIO: Oh god.
You seriously want me to drop you off in the middle of
nowhere.
KALLISTE: Not just nowhere,
a very specific island. There is a
reason I chose your
ship: I knew it’s route. I knew it was going to pass by exactly where
I
needed to go.
PAGE 14. PANEL 3.
THE CAPTAIN LOOKS DOWN, HANDS FOLDED.
CAPTAIN JULIO: I
don’t feel good about this.
KALLISTE: You don’t have

has been dead for many years.
KALLISTE: And I’m
here, right now. Please.

GLENDA: …Yes. I wonder if we can take Jimmy to the yard,
he’s always wanted to see
the ships.
KALLISTE: I don’t
see--

pneumonia too.
GLENDA: I should have
been here.
PAGE 15. PANEL 5.

ONI RYU: How quickly
the conviction goes away.
KALLISTE: Shut up and
fix him.
ONI RYU: We’ve never
tried it on anyone else before. What
makes you think it’ll
work?
KALLISTE: I don’t
know if it will. Just please, try.
ONI RYU: You’ve wished
to die since you were saved.
KALLISTE: I’m
wrong. Maybe you’re the best thing
that’s ever happened to me.
Happy? Fix him!
PAGE 16. PANEL 2.
THE EMT’S ARE TALKING TO YOLANDA AND GLENDA.
EMT 2: I’m
sorry. We couldn’t resuscitate him. The pneumonia had gotten too bad to

Mommy!
GLENDA: JIMMY!
PAGE 16. PANEL 3.
GLENDA IS HOLDING JIMMY IN THE ROOM. YOLANDA WATCHES OVER THEM. THE EMTS ARE LOOKING IN FROM THE DOORWAY OF

GLENDA: They said you
were dead, but you came back.
EMT 1: I…I have no
words.
EMT 2: I thought for
sure he was gone.
YOLANDA: My baby is okay.
PAGE 16. PANEL 4.
KALLISTE IS COMING INTO THE ROOM.
KALLISTE: What
happened?
GLENDA: He died, but
came back.
JIMMY: I thought I
saw an angel, she had marks on her body.
GLENDA: It is a
miracle. Kalliste, I’m taking the day,
going to take him to the hospital,
get him checked out.
KALLISTE: Good idea.

you?
PAGE 17. PANEL 2.

says that he is perfectly healthy now.
He’s never seen anything
like it. The whooping cough and
pneumonia are totally gone. A miracle.
KALLISTE: Would you
like to see the battleship, Jimmy?
GLENDA: I don’t know
if we can—
SUPERVISOR (OFF PANEL):
Glenda, can I speak to you?
PAGE 18. PANEL 2.

GLENDA: I hope I’m
not in trouble. I’ll catch up with.

you out there, Glenda.

JIMMY: Mommy said it
was god talking to me.
KALLISTE: Can I talk
to him?
PAGE 18. PANEL 4.

JIMMY(ONI RYU): It’s
new, young, but I think I might like it.
KALLISTE: You need to
come back. This wasn’t the deal.
DIALOGUE CONT.
JIMMY (ONI RYU): What
deal? You keep me locked up and only use
me when you
need
me. With Jimmy I think I can form a
partnership. He’ll let
me out when
I want to go out, and I’ll protect him when he wants
to hide.
KALLISTE: But I’m
going to die.
PAGE 18. PANEL 5.
JIMMY SHRUGS.
JIMMY (ONI RYU): You
took us for granted, now you know what
everyone else goes
through.
KALLISTE: But you’re
mine.
JIMMY (ONI RYU): I
belong to myself. I like this plane, and
so I’m going to spend
some time
on it with Jimmy.
KALLISTE: No!

KALLISTE: That was
the last time, until recently, that I had let the demon out. You see,
I
don’t deserve to live. I deserve to be
punished for my cowardice. I’ve
been
trying to figure out how, and now I think I know.
CAPTAIN JULIO: Yes, I
think it best that you leave.
KALLISTE: Do you hate
me now?
CAPTAIN JULIO: Not
hate. Just…disappointed.
PAGE 20. PANEL 2.
KALLISTE IS LOOKING UP FROM THE ROW BOAT THAT SHE IS BEING
LOWERED INTO THE OCEAN IN.
KALLISTE: And why
does that feel so much worse to me than hate?
CAPTAIN JULIO:
Because we hate to disappoint people, where as we don’t mind if
they hate us.
KALLISTE: I’m sorry.
CAPTAIN JULIO: Find
your peace.
